Remote VPN Access – User Guide (OPNSense / OpenVPN).

OpenVPN Client on Windows Systems

Requirements

Installing the VPN client requires local administrator rights in your computer. If you don't have local admin rights, please contact your system administrator to assist.

Using the remote access requires Google Authenticator installed in your mobile phone.

Your connection profile and your QR code to activate Google Authenticator for your VPN access should have been sent to you via email in a compressed zip file.

Unzipping the content of this file is protected by a password sent to you in a text message to your mobile phone.

If neither the email with the zip file nor the text message with the password to unzip the file have been sent to you, please contact your manager or supervisor.

Install the OpenVPN Client.

Download OpenVPN client for Windows from the URL:

https://openvpn.net/downloads/openvpn-connect-v3-windows.msi

Save the MSI file to your computer, any folder of your choice.

Go the folder where the MSI file was stored and execute the file to initiate the install process:

On the welcome screen click Next:

Accept terms in the license agreement page and click Next:

Click Install and the installation process, including all required drivers, will start:

The User Account Control verification will open to confirm the app install:

After the installation is complete click Finish:

Import Your OpenVPN Connection Profile.

Unzip the file sent to you to any folder of your choice. As mentioned in the requirements section, earlier in this document, unzipping the file will prompt for a password.

Open the QR code on your computer and add a new access on your Google Authenticator app (phone) by scanning the QR code.

A new icon in your desktop (OpenVPN GUI) was placed after installing the OpenVPN client; double click to start the VPN client:

After the first time install, the VPN client shows an onboarding screen. Skip this tour by clicking the close symbol, top right of the screen:

Read the application terms and conditions and Agree to continue:

Finally, a message with latest changes and updates on the OpenVPN client app is displayed::

In the Import profile Menu, go to the FILE tab, click Browse and select the connection profile previously unzipped (.ovpn file).

Assign or rename the Profile Name and type your Username. DO NOT select “Save password” since the password will include the SoftToken and this value changes over time:

Click Add, top right, to finish importing your profile:

Connect to the Remote VPN.

To connect to the VPN click on the toggle switch shown in the application main screen:

You will be prompted to type your password to connect:

In the password box you will need to enter YOUR PASSWORD and the SoftToken provided by the Google Authenticator App. No spaces or any other characters in between.

As an example:

If your password is mypassword

And the Softtoken value is 123456

In the password box you'd have to type:

mypassword123456
