How to Increase Server Limits in Hetzner Cloud

How to Increase Server Limits in Hetzner Cloud

A complete guide to understanding and requesting limit increases for your Hetzner Cloud resources

Why Would You Need to Increase Server Limits?

Hetzner Cloud implements default resource limits for new customers to ensure fair resource allocation and prevent abuse. You might need to increase these limits when:

  • Scaling Infrastructure: Your business is growing and you need more servers to handle increased traffic and workload
  • Large Deployments: You're deploying a Kubernetes cluster, microservices architecture, or distributed application requiring multiple instances
  • Development Environments: You need multiple test, staging, and development environments running simultaneously
  • High Availability Setup: Implementing load balancers, failover systems, or redundant infrastructure across multiple availability zones
  • Batch Processing: Running parallel compute tasks that require spinning up multiple temporary instances
  • Multi-tenant Applications: Providing isolated environments for different clients or projects

Common Default Limits

Hetzner Cloud applies various limits to your account. While specific numbers may vary, here are typical resource limits new customers encounter:

Cloud Servers

10-25

Per project/location

Primary IPs

5-10

IPv4/IPv6 addresses

Volumes

10-20

Additional storage

Load Balancers

5-10

Per project

Note: Actual limits may vary based on your account age, payment history, and region. Check your Hetzner Console for exact current limits.

Prerequisites for Requesting Limit Increases

Important Requirements

Before you can request a limit increase, you must meet these criteria:

  • Your account must be at least one month old
  • You must have paid your first invoice successfully
  • Your account should be in good standing with no payment issues

How to Request a Limit Increase

  1. Log into Hetzner Console: Navigate to https://console.hetzner.cloud/ and sign in to your account
  2. Access Limits Overview: Click on your account menu in the upper right-hand corner and select "Limits" from the dropdown menu
  3. View Current Limits: Review your current resource limits and usage to identify which limits need to be increased
  4. Initiate Request: Click on "Request change" → "Limit increase" at the top right of the limits overview page
  5. Fill Out Request Form: In the request dialog, provide:
    • Specific resource types you need increased (servers, IPs, volumes, etc.)
    • Requested new limits for each resource
    • Detailed business justification explaining why you need the increase
    • Expected timeline for when you'll need these resources
  6. Submit Request: Click "Request limit increase" to submit your request to Hetzner's review team
  7. Wait for Review: Hetzner's team will review your request. This typically takes 1-3 business days for standard increases

Tips for a Successful Limit Increase Request

Best Practices

  • Be Specific: Clearly state which resources you need and the exact quantities
  • Provide Context: Explain your use case, business needs, or technical requirements
  • Be Realistic: Request reasonable increases based on your actual needs, not theoretical maximums
  • Show Usage History: If you're consistently near your current limits, mention this in your request
  • Plan Ahead: Request increases before you hit your limits to avoid service interruptions
  • Include Timeline: Specify when you expect to need the additional resources

Example Request Description:

"We are scaling our SIEM platform. Currently using 8/10 server limit and need to increase to 25 servers for load balancing across 3 availability zones. Expected deployment date: November 15th."

What Happens After Approval?

Once your limit increase is approved:

  • You'll receive confirmation via email and in your Hetzner Console
  • New limits will be immediately active in your account
  • You can begin creating additional resources up to your new limits
  • Billing will continue as normal based on actual resource usage

Alternative Solutions

While waiting for limit increases or if your request is denied, consider these alternatives:

  • Multiple Projects: Create separate Hetzner projects to distribute resources
  • Different Regions: Deploy resources across multiple Hetzner locations
  • Resource Optimization: Use larger server instances instead of many smaller ones
  • Auto-scaling: Implement dynamic scaling to use resources more efficiently
  • Temporary Workarounds: Use other cloud providers for overflow capacity while limits are increased

Troubleshooting Common Issues

Request Denied or Delayed?

  • Ensure your account meets the one-month minimum requirement
  • Verify all invoices are paid and account is in good standing
  • Provide more detailed justification for your resource needs
  • Consider requesting smaller increases initially to build trust

Still Can't Create Resources?

  • Double-check you're within your updated limits
  • Verify you're creating resources in the correct project/region
  • Contact Hetzner support if limits show as increased but resources can't be created
